Tree at dust symbolizing God's faithfulness

How Can We be Saved?

The Bible teaches us in Ephesians 2:5 that when we were dead in our sins, God made us alive with Jesus—it is by grace we have been saved! We can be saved when we confess Jesus as Lord and believe that God raised him from the dead.

We can’t do anything to earn our salvation. Can a dead person make themselves alive again? Of course not. Only God can perform the miracle of raising the dead back to new life. That’s exactly what Paul says has happened to us. Sin places all of us in a condition of spiritual death, and the miracle of salvation is that God makes us alive again through Jesus.

Romans 10:9 says,
If you declare . . .‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.’

This kind of belief is more than just a mental agreement that Jesus died for our sins and rose again. The Greek word is pistis, which means ‘‘trust.’’ Trusting Jesus means placing our lives in his hands and following his commandments. It means turning away from sin, knowing we have been freed from its bondage and living as God’s children.

This trust doesn’t mean we’ll never doubt. We all feel unsure at times, but faith means we press on with hope, following even when the way seems unclear. Even when we can’t see God’s saving work in our lives, we trust Jesus is faithfully bringing us home to eternal life with God.

If I’m saved why do I keep doing the same sin over and over again?

I am amazed that you discuss salvation without mentioning baptism. Yes, we are saved by grace, but the Lord teaches obedience in baptism. The beautiful passage in Romans 6 tells how our baptism reenacts the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hi Ann. Your concern is deeply appreciated but how can you preach baptism to a sinner who hasn’t fully decided to trust Jesus with their lives. while we that are saved get the gist, let build a solid foundation of the importance of giving their lives to Christ first before emphasizing on the next thing to do. Because, of what importance is someone you are telling about salvation and immediately emphasizing on them getting baptized when in their heart, the seed has not yet start germinating. No one ever told me about the need for baptism but when I fully accepted Christ with the Whole of my heart, I knew I needed to be baptized to complete my ritual of being a follower of Christ.

  6. Dick Knoefel says:

Dear Brothers and Sisters, How can we be saved? Very appropriate for the time we are living in. Dr. George Barna of the Culture Research Center states that only six percent of born again Christians, and thirty seven percent of pastors have a biblical worldview. It’s no wonder why we have so much confusion and chaos in our country. Where there is envy and strife this leads to confusion and every evil activity. We as followers of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ need to get to work. We are commanded to make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

We can not be saved through good works alone. I asked, why then do we continue to do good works, going to mission trips to spread the gospel, help the poor, go to Sunday worships etc. Then my elderly 88 yr old lady friend said; it is by God’s grace that we continue to do all good works for HIS GLORY!

  9. Very inspiring message. We are saved by grace through faith, believing and confessing the lordship of Jesus and daily living to please The Lord. Hallelujah.

You can’t say in one sentence we are saved by faith alone and there is nothing we can do to earn our salvation. Then turn around and say that faith means trust and trust means obedience and turning from sin. You are adding works to the gospel. Faith ALONE in Christ ALONE is the only way to be saved.

  12. Olofingorite Olorunmayowa says:

There are five steps to salvation but you mentioned three in your message.
    (1)Hearing(Romans 10:17)
    (2)Belief(Hebrews 11:6)
    (3)Repent(Acts 17:30)
    (4)Confess(Hebrews 10:9,10)
    (5)Baptism(Acts 2:38).
(6)Then you are added to His body, the Church. And you continue in the Apostles doctrines(Acts 2:41,42).
The sixth condition is very essential for obedience to the New Covenant.
