Woman considering God's ways

Faith in God’s Ways

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the LORD.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
As the rain and the snow
come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
You will go out in joy
and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and hills
will burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the field
will clap their hands.
Instead of the thornbush will grow the juniper,
and instead of briers the myrtle will grow.
This will be for the LORD’s renown,
for an everlasting sign,
that will endure forever.”

Isaiah 55:8-13

How God does things is often not how we would do things. Isaiah reminds us that his ways are higher, his thoughts are utterly different than our own. In short, he is God, and we are not.

Isaiah ends this passage with joy. As we trust in God and his ways, joy returns. We don’t have to figure everything out. We don’t have to rely on our own frail understanding. Our sovereign, powerful God has a good plan, and that plan involves his presence going before us.

Sometimes we cannot see how a painful situation will ever work out. Where we see thorn bushes, God sees junipers. Where we see briers, God sees the myrtle. He makes beauty from ashes, life from death, hope from hopelessness. Because his ways are higher, and we can’t understand everything that is happening, we can trust that he will do good things in and through us.

It’s one thing to have faith in our own ways, but it is quite another to truly have faith in the ways of God. He is the master of miracles. May today be a day that you have complete faith in God’s ways.

Prayer

Lord, my ways are understandable and explainable, but your ways? They are higher than my highest thought. Help me to have faith in your ways, relying on you and what you can do. I choose to follow you, come what may. Amen.

Application

What struggle in your life right now would you like to see God turn around? Ask him to intervene.

I agree fully with the devotion, because God is not a man but the Creator of men, so His ways are surely higher than our ways, so are His thoughts higher than ours, as heaven is higher than earth, so are His ways higher than ours. He is the Most High God. He reigns Supreme and should never be compared to man. He loves man and created him in His own image, but man can never be equal to God. Thanks for the devotion.

  29. Rhona Hughes says:

I am lost and struggling to believe in a loving God, in the way I had done so strongly before my daughter died 13 months ago. My faith has been shattered and I cannot find conviction to believe in the ‘truth’ the bible presents. I have read the promises of eternal life for those who give their hearts to Jesus so many times – as I had done many years ago, read so many promises and now it all feels like a fairytale we tell ourselves to deal with an unknown future in eternity. I trusted God to bring my daughter through all the trials of depression and bipolar disorder – She longed for peace of mind and I prayed with her asking God to give her peace. I have read these verses about God’s ways being higher than ours many times before, when it was easy to agree because my faith hadn’t had to trust my child’s life to him. I believed Jeremiah 29:11 – but for my daughter it didn’t turn out that way and I am grieving like a non-believer. How do I find my faith again so I can have the reassurance I so desperately need that I will see her again in eternity ?

    1. Dale says:

I am so sorry to hear that you’ve lost your darling daughter. As a Mum myself, I can understand how devastating that would be. As you continue to grieve for her, be kind to yourself. Do some nice things for yourself. While you might feel like you have been rejected and you have more questions than answers, tell God how much you are hurting and worrying about seeing your daughter in eternity. He loves you more than you will ever know. He still has a plan for your life. He understands what your daughter faced and how difficult things were for her. He loves your daughter more than you know. He will keep her in his care. He is not a harsh God. He is a God of love. He understands our every weakness and illness. Try and take some baby steps to trust Him to hold you through this time. Hopefully, you have some kind, caring and encouraging friends, who can uphold you in their prayers and who you can share your pain with. You might need you to reach out for help, as well. God bless you with his love, peace and strength.
